Not sure when you'll be coming back to India, but just think if the NGO involvement is coming a little too late in the day. Will it stick out abnormally or be an asset?
//I am not sure if this is the right time for me to do an MBA in Fin but I want to do it soon.
Sure. It's a good time as any, if you know what you want to do post MBA.
// I am also confused between 1 & 2 years, since taking 2 years break off-work would be a big deal for me due to personal reason. So, I am keen to do an executive MBA after 5 yrs work ex?
I think you are referring to a regular full time 1 year MBA program, and not an Executive MBA (which is very different in format and targetted at a different level of professionals).
You are currently in a situation where you could apply for 1 year as well as 2 year MBA courses. For any reason, you aren't keen on 2 year options, you'd be ruling out the US (American) MBA programs.
Canada, Europe, Asia, India are still open.

1.Will it be better for me to do Executive MBA in Finance or a regular 1 year MBA?
2.Please can you provide some inputs on my profile, as to where I need to improve?
3.WIll I be able to get admission in one of the so called 'top' schools for MBA (in India or Abroad)?
4.Where can I find the details of 1 year MBA(Fin) options in Europe?
5.I plan to grow at a manager level handling all the finance related matters, but I dont have much insight about the job prospects after I complete MBA. That is, job options with me in a position of 5+ exp & MBA.
Your response will is much appreciated.
Thanks

//1.Will it be better for me to do Executive MBA in Finance or a regular 1 year MBA?
The two are not comparable. I still have a suspicion that you are mixing up terminologies. Give me specific names of the kind of programs you have in mind.
//2.Please can you provide some inputs on my profile, as to where I need to improve?
You haven't shared anything about your post-MBA goals. So tough to say anything specific. But you do have a good balance of techno-functional experience.
Brush up on the functional side and your knowledge about finance and SCM. Plus see how your NGO plans come along.
//3.WIll I be able to get admission in one of the so called 'top' schools for MBA (in India or Abroad)?
Open ended questions won't help anyone, buddy. You've left too many variables in the air. What is your definition of 'so called top schools'? I don't want to give you a sugar-coated response to a question which could go anywhere.
//4.Where can I find the details of 1 year MBA(Fin) options in Europe?
Check out the Financial Times MBA rankings. You'll get all the names country wise.
//5.I plan to grow at a manager level handling all the finance related matters, but I dont have much insight about the job prospects after I complete MBA. That is, job options with me in a position of 5+ exp & MBA.
This would be the biggest hurdle. Forget about extra-curriculars, NGO etc. Focus on what you want from the MBA first and where the career graph will lead. I see big disconnects in the story.
If you've said you have functional knowledge about finance and later on the Admission officer realises there are big gaps in your understanding of finance roles, that would be a big no-no.
The initial post started off well, but as you might have realised, the second post has started going off on a tangent. Need to do a little more groundwork, so the questions start getting more aligned and specific.
I'm sure it's a matter of time before you get that clarity.
Good luck, bro.

i do understand that both are not comparable but i do not have a very clear picture of distinction. What i understand abt executive is:
- needs more experience to get into
- mostly MBA will be while working
- will help in getting promotion in same company you're working in, but might not get jobs in other companies
- no placement assistance
- mostly for moving employee from middle to upper management
I am not very keen to do executive MBA but rather a full time MBA, but I am not dropping this option as I have to check for the possibility of going totally off-work for one year due to monetary reasons.
The kind of programs i am targetting are like
XLRI GMP, iimb (epgp), isb hyderabad (pgp) etc. I have not yet checked for options abroad but will be doing now
//2.Please can you provide some inputs on my profile, as to where I need to improve?

post MBA goals
- learn leadership skills & taking up responsiblities
- move to managerial position. at the same time i have this doubt that if i make transition completely into management stuff, will my previous experience as i finance consultant be used or not?
- better income offcourse
- working with the top brands in India or abroad
- once i complete mba and have some experience post that, would like to start up my own venture. parallely working on the same.
- i have always been interested in brand management, like how to make brands sell better through various methods and i want to get into this field but i am not sure how i will?
yes, i am working actively towards functional side in finance and SCM & NGO aswell
//3.WIll I be able to get admission in one of the so called 'top' schools for MBA (in India or Abroad)?

i know that i have left too much to judge from too little information. Well, top business schools means the top in terms of ranking. I do need to do a lot of research. But this discussion will help me go in right direction.
//4.Where can I find the details of 1 year MBA(Fin) options in Europe?
Check out the Financial Times MBA rankings. You'll get all the names country wise.
will definitely do some more research on this but if you see most of these colleges have huge fees. Assuming even if somebody gets into this with all the hard work, i am not sure how i would proceed further

I have worked on finance and i am good at it, but at the same time i am not so passionate about it.
Right now i am in process to gathering things and then work towards them. And this discussion is surely helping. Much appreciated

I wasn't sure if I'd hear back from you after that last response. Thanks for taking the feedback in the right spirit.
//i do understand that both are not comparable but i do not have a very clear picture of distinction.
:
post MBA goals
:
For all these, a Full-time MBA would be a better option than an Executive MBA.
//Well, top business schools means the top in terms of ranking.
Use rankings as a starting point, but don't stick only to the top schools. Shortlist those where you'd have a good chance of meeting your objectives.
//will definitely do some more research on this but if you see most of these colleges have huge fees. Assuming even if somebody gets into this with all the hard work, i am not sure how i would proceed further
That's another reason why ranking should not be the primary criteria for selecting schools. If the chances of getting into a school are low, then the odds of getting scholarships are lower.
//I have worked on finance and i am good at it, but at the same time i am not so passionate about it.
If you aren't passionate about the line, you should re-think if you want to target the same line after your MBA. There are many more options in strategy, marketing, operations, etc that you could think about.

-- Education :: B. Tech, Chem. Engg., IIT Bombay -- with avg. or not good CPI of : approx. 6.8
-- Work exp. :: 5 yrs as on Jun 2012. In a small indian company. Involved in Product design & development, QC - raw material and finished product, Production, vendor development, taking care of technical queries and issues with product, partially in marketing and ISO implementation. (initially involved in civil work and erection of the greenfield project).
-- GMAT - in Mar 2012. Score - 750 (41 - verb, 50 - quant, 6 in AWA).
Want to go for MBA abroad in fall session 2013 - focus on attaining all round competence required for starting and running businesses. Tentative (not sure) focus areas -- Entrepreneurship, finance;; operations or general management.
A few important issues with my profile which need to be resolved while trying for the top B-schools of US:
a) Not so good Under grad. performance
b) Lack of community service / not for profit....
c) Lack of extra currics (especially since in job)
d) A small company rather than a big MNC brand
e) Probably lack of formal "awards" in job.
I request help on three questions from your kind-self :
Qus 1. Would request you to suggest other shortcomings in your view.
Qus 2. How can I overcome these by emphasizing on some other "goodness factors / appealing factors" to the top B-schools :
I have few extra points which I recollect at the moment which may or may not possess value. Listing them below :
a) Technology transfer (from a European Firm) for only of its kind plant in India. Member of the core technical team involved in setting up of greenfield project.
b) Frequent interactions and trips for business (vendors as well as customers) to Europe and US.
c) Internship during under-grad : University of British Columbia, Canada under the VP - Research
d) cross cultural exposure in a sense -- From North India, working in South India interacting with shop floor workers in local language adjusting to local way of life. Also work with European technology partner on regular basis.
e) Working closely with the owner of the group, hence developing more of ( a result-oriented, less of faff ) entrepreneurial approach towards issues -
>recommending and developing the product range in a time-bound fashion for company as well as tailor made product ranges for key customers,
>accountable for production planning, raw material planning, production output and yields,
> responsible for collaboration with technology provider for ironing out various issues related to process,
>involvement in HR related issues - recruitment and handling of work force issues, instrumental in developing the
>Working and managing in Cash-strapped conditions (along with exodus of key personnel), -- right from erection to operations. Our industry is directly dependent on Real Estate so right from the start - other than the teething troubles of start-up, we have faced and continue to face the wrath of recession in big way since our main market is USA and second biggest market is Western Europe. Starting from scratch, factory is close to achieving sales of more than USD 7 million in FY 2012.
Qus 3. Interested in learning how to start-up and manage a business. What should I put forward as my post-MBA goal ? Which stream of MBA should I opt for in light of above ?

Thanks Animesh. We're trying to consolidate our responses in one place so others can also benefit. Let's make your effort of posting here, worthwhile.
// -- Education :: B. Tech, Chem. Engg., IIT Bombay -- with avg. or not good CPI of : approx. 6.8

Off to a great start, bro!
// Tentative (not sure) focus areas -- Entrepreneurship, finance;; operations or general management.
Hmm...gotta get this part sorted out. Four options will make it confusing to build a solid storyline. So you'll have to knock out 3 of them based on the following parameters: your current strengths, how much are you stretching these to reach your goals.
// A few important issues with my profile which need to be resolved while trying for the top B-schools of US:
Relevant points, but not big enough to topple the cart.
//I request help on three questions from your kind-self :
My kind self is all ears, sire
// Qus 1. Would request you to suggest other shortcomings in your view.
For starters, the post-MBA story needs to shape up. I don't think the others are such a big concern if you can squeeze out some nice leadership, managerial, team-work related stories from your professional backgroun. There are high chances that each of these will be unique, as your industry/role are unique.
//Qus 2. How can I overcome these by emphasizing on some other "goodness factors / appealing factors" to the top B-schools :
Answered in the previous point.
//I have few extra points which I recollect at the moment which may or may not possess value. Listing them below :
"May or may not possess value"!!! Either you are being too modest or just pulling my leg, bro. This IS the meat of your application. Of course, they are all relevant and impactful. This is exactly what you should be focussing on in your MBA essays.
//Qus 3. Interested in learning how to start-up and manage a business. What should I put forward as my post-MBA goal ? Which stream of MBA should I opt for in light of above ?
This one is difficult to address in a simple response (as we'd first need to fix the earlier point on narrowing down your choices).
For now, I'll just say that the 'stream' you opt for would be more of a formality. What you do with the MBA brand and the lessons you learn in class will decide how successful you are in breaking into the post-MBA career of your choice.

Kudos, amazing site and lot of interesting stuff!
Found answers to most of the questions I had in your site…You got a real crystal ball
Had been wondering for quite some time now on whether MBA is my cup of tea and thought will check with you before I go any further.
Profile:
Age : 31
Industry : IT (Project Management, Coordination, Customer Handling, Solution Consulting and s/w development) in one of the top Indian IT company
Total Experience - 9 Years as of now
IT Experience - 8 Years as of now
Overseas : 4.5 years as of now
UG : Bachelor of Engineering - 65%
Certification : PMP & ITIL
Awards: Europe Excellence Award for Best Coordinator 2007 & 2008 , Outstanding Performance twice
GMAT: Planning to take in another 3 to 4 months targeting 700 +
EC: Nothing worth mentioning
Motivation:
I am in to Project Coordination and solution consulting in my current role and want to move in to IT Business Development.
I believe a formal education in management will increase my circle of impact and aid in being a better BDM than what I would be without it.
Like every other person, I would like to start my own IT company in a couple of years time post MBA which will employ recent mothers and people who prefer work life balance (Haven’t come up with a business plan or model yet).
Aspiration:
I am planning for a 1 year MBA in India and drooling over XLRI ,IIM (A,B,C) and ISB, will apply in 2013.
Post MBA:
BDM in IT
Looking at my profile can you let me know what needs improvement and what should be highlighted when I apply for a B School?
Cheers,
Harish
