Hi Sameer ,

My Name is Bishnu Prasad Mishra . I have around 6 years of IT experience with TCS ( 4 Year ) and Wells Fargo India ( 2 Years ).
My education background below

10th ( 86%)
12th ( 82%)
B.Tech from BPUT University (7.9 CGPA ) -2010 Pass out

Currently I am working with WellsFargo as a DevOps Lead and Senior Java Developer .
At current state i am getting a package of 12Lakh which i can make to 20 lakh with one switch in 1/2 months ( before 2017 start )
Last year I prepared for GMAT but unfortunately could not able to write the exam as my passport was with US Consulate.

My Questions below

Is EPGP will help me in career growth or it is too late ?
Or any specific programme will be helpful for me ?

Why i need an MBA ?
- I am okay with current IT Profile , so no such change in profile required . Want to achieve a senior Manager ( meaning not just by promotion as most IT managers do )
- Salary Growth
- I am not sure with IT how far i can go in terms of salary & career .
- I am not at all looking for job / education in abroad .I want to be in India for some family problem .
- Average financial condition ( Need to depend upon Loan ) ( not so bad not so good )
- In Mock test i scored 620 - 640 with 48/49 in Quant and 23/25 at Verbal .( Need a steady improvement in verbal ) which i believe i can do .

Also where can i see your response , will i get an automated mail to my registered mail id or do i need to visit the forum regularly .

Many Thanks in Advance for bearing with me and my silly questions but important to me .
Looking forward to you with eager.
Regards,
Bishnu Mishra

This recommendation will be more effective and helpful to others consider distance graduation programs, if you'd be willing to share more details about your personal experience. If you have the inclindation, I will reach out over email for further details.

When you've proved yourself for almost a decade, instead of focussing on skills and capability, it's unfortunate that companies are still insisting on academics.
Thanks for your valuable time and effort to reply to my post.
Most companies dont like people with distance education degree. Its a hard fact.
Do you know any good MSc or MS courses (distance) which have good value in the industry, and something which can virtually hide my distance education degree?
At the current stage in my life and career I cannot do a full time course. Any recommendations will be helpful.

Bishnu,

If you have no intentions of exploring international job opportunities then the EPGP would be a good program to target. You can also look at the other one year MBA offered by ISB and a few other IIMs.

You'll have to raise the GMAT higher than what you've been getting in the mocks.

The forum sends an auto-notification. Hope that's what brought you here to read this response.

I'm not aware of any such course. Also, it would not be a good idea to try to cover up one distance degree with another. You'll just end up with 2 that don't help.

Though tedious, it may still be a better (and low risk) option to continue to discover teams that value your skills over your degrees.

Thanks for your response. Agree with you to an extent. But growing up the ladder will become a problem.
Let me see if I can find a solution. Full time PG might help, but I dont know how to pursue it :)

Hi Sameer,

This is Deep. I am seeking for your career counselling advice because my career is at quite an unusual state at this point.

I did my B.Sc and M.Sc in Chemistry from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India and pursued Ph.D. in the same in the University of Saskatchewan, Canada in 2011. But in early 2016 (after 4.5 years into the program), due to my mother's sudden death, my dad's illness and other family issues I had to get back without finishing my Ph.D. (my supervisor was obviously not willing to let me have a year-long leave, which was the only option for me to take care of my dad and the family issues). After getting back to India, the industry jobs seemed to be not well-paid, since they were considering me as a Masters fresher.

This is why I am considering an option of doing MBA, preferably from abroad (US or Europe) with a GMAT score around 700 (projected based on recent mock tests) and will be appearing in Dec. 2016. This is intended to get better job opportunities later.

My academic background:
10th standard (2002): 86%,
12th standard (2004) (science): 88%,
B.Sc (Chemistry) (2008): 59.5%,
M.Sc (Chemistry) (2010): 66%

My questions:

1. Since most of the US universities prefer to have students with post-grad work experience, where do I stand considering I don't have a full-time experience? Although I used to be a graduate teaching assistant in Canada for 4.5 years and also a graduate research assistant in the department (have got best teaching assistantship awards, publications in US journals).

2. Does this international exposure give me an edge in getting admission when I apply to the US/European universities for a 2-year full-time MBA degree?

3. Alternately, would you suggest the one-year MS in Management Studies, considering that might be a better fit with my science background? I am willing to find a connection in my next job after graduation when I prefer a management position in the pharmaceutical industry with the extensive experience in organic chemistry/pharma research. Or maybe an MS in finance?

Many thanks in advance, looking forward to your invaluable opinion.

Bschools ask for relevant business exposure, Deep. I'm not sure if the assistantship experience would be directly relevant for MBA admissions, since it was part-time and academic (rather than business oriented).

Some lower ranked programs may not mind though. But we don't want to go down that route.

Answered above.

I don't think heading back into academics is the right way forward. The bigger issue that you are facing in getting a good break is lack of corporate experience. Graduating with another Masters degree will not fill that gap.

In fact, you'll be an older candidate compared to your competitors. It might be better to start working in any good company that offers you the oppportunity.

Don't worry too much about not being given a senior role. If you show potential, you'll rise through the hierarchy rapidly. If not, you'd still be better off having gained 2-3 years of marketable skills that some other employer will appreciate.

Hi Samir,

Actually I have been looking for jobs in chemical industry for past few months with no luck. I know several precedents where in India, being a Masters in my field (Chemistry) is a real obstacle to improving in career. The starting salary in average as a Masters fresher is barely 15-20k, and even after 10 years, that goes upto 25-27k and that gets stagnant. And there is always someone with a Ph.D. degree above you, and you cannot beat them in terms of salary/senior position since in India, in chemical industry maybe a 15 yrs experience with a Masters is comparable to a Ph.D. That's why several people, starting with a Masters, get frustrated and leave their jobs after 4-5 years to get a Ph.D. to get forward in their career. For me, after 4.5 years' investment in an unfinished Ph.D. is not giving me the choice to go for that again.

On other hand, I just looked into Questrom school of business, Boston univ. The admission counsellor says "Our one-year MSMS program is intended for recent graduates without work experience to gain knowledge of the business environment. This program is designed to be like a full time job, where students work from 9-5 in teams and groups and with real companies solving real problems. It gives students from Science backgrounds a window into the real business world and practical skills they can carry with them in their careers. Our MSMS program does not have any minimum scores listed as it is a pilot program."

Would you still suggest me the same to stayand look for chemical industry jobs and depend on expeirence to gain a senior role?

Looking forward to your reply, thanks again!

Deep

This sounds like a clear marketing pitch.

Think about it. If anyone is dropping the selectivity barriers, making you work from 9-5, and asking you to pay a fee for it, who's really gaining here?

I don't think any course can be an alternative for real world experience.

Though it may not be directly relevant, read this article on unpaid internships: https://www.mbacrystalball.com/blog/2016 ... rm-career/

Hello Sameer,

At the outset, let me first congratulate you and MG for the wonderful work you are doing at MCB.

I am an engg graduate(Mech) from state govt. engg. college and having 10 years of exp. in Oil refining companies in India. My functional domain is oil trading operations for crude oil/petroleum products import/export, international sales/purchase contract implementation, shipping logistics, refinery cargo planning etc. My current salary is about 24 lacs.

Due to the niche nature of my profile and industry there are very limited opportunity in India and further career progression. I am wondering if an MBA would add value to my profile to make it more generic and diversified to switch to other industry majorly in manufacturing/supply chain/operations domain ?

I am evaluating 1 year MBA in IIM-A/B/C/L/ISB but wonder if there would be jobs in my profile post MBA in view of my niche profile as most of the recruiters for the 1 year MBA are from IT /BFSI industry and would there be sufficient salary escalation post MBA. Further, I think, I can apply only after 1 year as the process for 1 year MBA runs 1 year in advance and at that time I would be having about 12 years of exp. Will IIM-A/L be suitable for me as the average work ex. Is higher as compared to IIM-B/C/ISB ?

Request for your valuable advice.
