Got this query from a student on LinkedIn a few days back.
Student: "I'm a gaming enthusiast. I always wanted to develop the gaming industry in our country, the way it is structured in the west. I want to connect with the big gaming companies and gain their trust. But people in those companies don't take me seriously. So I'm thinking of going for an MBA. Which MBA specialisation should I go for?"
Me: "I don't think an MBA can guarantee that people take you seriously. It also won't give you deeper insights into niche industries. However, the general principles of networking and marketing should be helpful. You can start off by connecting with folks who are already in the industry and active on platforms like LinkedIn."
Student: "Yes sir... But as a final year undergrad, many people are considering me to be inexperienced and a rookie who's really unaware of the industry. That's why they don't take me seriously. This is where the real problem is."
Me: "That's pretty much how any industry works. Young professionals will continue to be under-rated by those who've made it big.
The way to get around it is to position your work (and not yourself) as the hero. Allow people to appreciate the talent you have. Over time, they'll take you and your super-powers (to deliver) more seriously."
